Yankees: Pettitte to announce retirement Friday

(AP) - The New York Yankees say veteran pitcher AndyPettitte will announce his retirement during a Friday newsconference at the club's Bronx ballpark. The 38-year-old left-hander had been telling the team since theend of the season that it was likely he wouldn't play in 2011. Hebecame a free agent and did not attempt to negotiate a contract. Pettitte is 240-138 with a 3.88 ERA over 16 major leagueseasons, 13 of which were spent with the Yankees. He set a majorleague record for postseason wins by going 19-10 with a 3.83 ERA. The departure of a five-time World Series champion leaves a hugehole in the Yanks' rotation. They've got no proven starters behindCC Sabathia , Phil Hughes and A.J. Burnett.
