Clarkstown joins snow spending shortage club

Clarkstown's highway superintendent says that his municipality has officially joined the growing list of Hudson Valley locales that are already over their snow removal budget for 2011 with still weeks of winter weather ahead.

Superintendent Wayne Ballard says that his crews have already used more than $800,000 of their near-million dollar snow budget, and that he's concerned about what that could mean for the remainder of the winter.

"Within just the month of January, I've used up 99 percent of my salt budget," Ballard said. He added that they may have to turn to contingency funds just to get through the winter, funds that are usually reserved for emergencies, and that the budget is also supposed to cover the end of 2011 as well.
