Special election next week to fill seat on WC County Board

Voters in Westchester will be heading back to the polls next week to fill a seat on the Westchester County Board vacated by Tom Abinanti (D-Westchester), who won a seat in the state Assembly.

In the running for the seat are Democrat Jane Shimsky and Republican Nicholas DeCicco.

Shimsky was a former aide to state Assemblyman Richard Brodsky (D-Westchester) until he left office in 2010. She says that while she is sympathetic to County Executive Rob Astorino's (R-Westchester) plan to lower taxes and streamline government, she feels the cuts are too drastic.

DeCicco, a family court prosecutor for the Westchester County Attorney's Office, says he agrees with Astorino's plans to streamline government.

The term expires in December, meaning the winner will return to the campaign trail soon if they wish to run for the full two-year term.
