Open door fuels Yonkers fire that left 27 homeless

Four Yonkers families are now homeless after a kitchen fire quickly spiraled out of control early last night.

Investigators say that an open door fueled the flames in the apartment at 2 Hyland Place Tuesday night.

Firefighters were on scene quickly, but the blaze had reached two alarms before they were able to put it out, forcing all four families who lived inside, a total of 27 people, out into the cold. Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries, but none of the tenants were hurt.

Fire officials say a preliminary investigation suggests the cause of the fire was electrical in nature, but are not sure of an exact cause.
