Parents, teachers petitioning to protest state education cuts

Parents and teachers in southern Westchester say that they're just not feeling the love from Albany this year, and are out collecting signatures today for a planned 'valentine' that they intend to send to state lawmakers in response to proposed education cuts.

Yonkers parents and teachers are asking lawmakers to "show their love" for children this Valentine's Day by stopping proposed 7 percent cuts to state education aid.

State officials say that New York is faced with a $10 billion deficit, and Gov. Cuomo has proposed the drastic cuts, along with hundreds of layoffs, in an effort to close the gap. Yonkers education representatives say that the city would lose $17.5 million in state aid next year, and that some 250 school employees could face layoffs.
