Trial begins for ex-Eastchester cop accused in friend's death

A trial began today for a former Eastchester police officer accused in the Nov. 2009 shooting death of his friend.

According to prosecutors, James Pillegi was off duty and showing off his gun when it fired, shooting 27-year-old Andre Everett in the neck.

During the opening statements, defense attorney Richard Port told the jury that prosecutors can't prove that Pillegi pointed his gun at Everett and pulled the trigger.

Prosecutors say Pillegi disregarded all of his training when he pulled out the 9 mm pistol while sitting in his SUV with two other men.

According to Pillegi, the two men were friends and the incident was an accident.
