Bronx math teacher wins Sloan Award
A Bronx math teacher won the prestigious Sloan Award for teaching excellence.
Students say Aristedes Uy, a teacher at International Community High School, is patient, creative and deserving of the award.
On Thursday, he taught students about radius using cans they brought from home. Uy says this hands-on approach helps students learn better and even inspires them to try harder.
"I think that the motivation factor is huge," said Uy. "You can see it in their faces. It's not just the routine pen/paper work. They become independent problem-solvers."
Uy has been teaching for eight years at International Community High School and he's also the chairman of the math department. He hopes to eventually make all math classes more hands-on.
