HRA to move into Banknote Building
The city's Human Resources Administration is moving its local offices into a Bronx landmark.
After two years of planning, the agency will move into the iconic Banknote Building, located at 890 Garrison Ave.
The four Bronx HRA offices will be consolidating into the one building to provide food vouchers, housing assistance and other benefits to needy families.
HRA says the move will provide clients with a more convenient "one-stop" service and improve the work environment for the staff.
Some employees say they are concerned because crossing Bruckner Boulevard to get to the building is dangerous and there is a lack of available parking. They also say better lighting at night is needed to help improve safety in the commercial area.
Community Board 2 is working to address the concerns and has reached out to the Department of Transportation and NYPD for additional police patrols and better lighting in the area.
Community Board Chairman Dr. Ian Amrett says the HRA has also agreed to provide security inside and outside of the building as an added safety measure.
It's estimated that the new HRA location will get about 2,000 visits a day from people seeking assistance.
