YONKERS - A report released by the Yonkers inspector general states that human error is to blame for the Yonkers school district's $55 million budget shortfall.

According to the 72-page report from Yonkers Inspector General Brendan McGrath, a school budget analyst anticipated aid the state never promised. McGrath also found that the former superintendent and board of education ignored audits that suggested the budget department was understaffed.

McGrath says the district needs to check on the money more regularly. In addition, Mayor Mike Spano is pushing for a power-sharing agreement that's the first of its kind in New York. He wants to merge several of the district's departments with the city to potentially save millions.

New school Superintendent Dr. Michael Yazurlo says district officials are carefully studying the report to work on ways to move forward.
