YONKERS - Yonkers Fire Commissioner Robert Sweeney is retiring after almost two years on the job.

Sweeney presided over his last promotion ceremony Wednesday. He is leaving the Yonkers Fire Department and returning to the FDNY.

Sweeney previously served at the FDNY for 33 years and held the second-highest ranking office until coming to Yonkers in August 2012.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano appointed Sweeney and says the commissioner did a lot for the city.

Yonkers Assistant Chief John Darcy has been named the interim commissioner until a permanent replacement is made.

Sweeney will be formally stepping down next week.
