Power plant critics point to indictments as key concern

WAWAYANDA - Opponents of a gas-fired power plant near Wawayanda say the recent indictment of the governor's top aide confirms their concerns about the project.

They contend the indictment of Joseph Percoco, a former top aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, confirms their fears that state officials were bought off by the owners of Competitive Power Ventures, or CPV, to get their plant built.

According to a federal indictment, Percoco accepted money from Peter Galbraith Kelly, a now former top official with CPV.

More than a dozen opponents gathered in the Goshen offices of their attorney Michael Sussman, who called for a wider probe of possible bribery connected to the plant. Among them was actor and activist James Cromwell.

"They didn't inform people about the consequences of this plant, and so in every way…this government has failed us," says Cromwell.

Opponents of the CPV plant say they won't rely solely on the courts to scuttle the project. They intend to make it an issue in this year's elections and, if needed, next year's as well.

CPV officials say they have done nothing wrong and, if the alleged bribes did happen, it was done by Peter Kelly without their permission.

Both Joseph Percoco and Peter Galbraith Kelly have entered not guilty pleas to their criminal charges.
