PEEKSKILL - A 23-year veteran Peekskill police officer apparently committed suicide inside his home on Welcher Avenue over the weekend.

Chris Vazeos, 49, was remembered as an “all-around great guy” by Peekskill Mayor Frank Catalina, who was a long-time friend to the officer.

"He would walk into a situation where nine out of 10 guys would call for backup,” said Catalina. “He would basically handle it himself."

Vazeos, a Peekskill native, was found by the officers he worked so closely with.

He leaves behind a wife and four kids. Friends say one of his sons is about to join the Rockland County Police Academy.
