MOUNT VERNON - Students at the Graham School returned to class Tuesday morning with sadness, after a stray bullet killed one of their classmates over the holiday break.

Shamoya McKenzie, 13, was on her way home from basketball practice when she was struck in the head by a bullet while riding in the car with her mother and two other family members near East Third and Tecumseh avenues on Dec. 31.

McKenzie was transported to Mount Vernon Hospital where she died, according to City Councilman Marcus Griffith.

Mount Vernon school leaders gathered Tuesday afternoon to assure her family that they are not alone in their grief.

"We will remember Shamoya as a bright, budding young lady with a bright future,” said Mount Vernon School Superintendent Ken Hamilton.

The quiet yet determined 6-foot-2 eighth-grader went to Graham School but played for Mount Vernon High School's junior varsity team. Her family says she dreamed of playing for UConn and then in the WNBA.

The district opened an emergency response center, and 300 people have already spoken to grief counselors.

A GoFundMe page has been set up as police continue their search for her killer.

New York State Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information in the case. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-313-TIPS.
