CARMEL - The Senate task force on heroin and members of local law enforcement met Thursday in Carmel to discuss the heroin epidemic in the area.

The objective of the meeting was to begin the process of curbing the overdoses that are plaguing addicts.

Many of those in attendance had personal interactions with overdose victims. Each member shared their thoughts on how to eliminate the heroin epidemic. Sen. Greg Ball proposed an expanded use and training of the overdose reversal drug, Narcan, which buys an addict more time after an overdose.

Many others in attendance say using Narcan is not enough, saying the root of the problem is access to treatment and the lack of insurance. One woman said her son has been hooked on heroin for years, yet whenever he attempts to get treatment he can't get it covered.

Every person that attended the meeting received a free emergency resuscitation kit intended for overdoses. First responders will be taught how to use the overdose reversal drug Narcan.

Ball, who helped organize the training, says the program is being paid for by money raised through local drug seizures. Ball will hold a roundtable discussion with the Putnam County sheriff before the training session to figure out ways to keep heroin out of teen's hands.
