WHITE PLAINS - A trial in the Corridor of Corruption case may be put on hold if the lawyer for one of the defendants has his way.

Sen. Malcolm Smith is among the defendants in a federal corruption case that also involves officials from Rockland County. During a court appearance in White Plains, Smith's lawyer asked that the trial be put off until after this year's primary election because his client is seeking re-election.

It's alleged that Smith, a Democrat, was at the center of a bribery scheme to secure him the Republican nomination for New York mayor.

While no decision has been made yet, the lawyer for ex-Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmine said he does not object to a delay.

Jasmine and five other political leaders were arrested last April, accused of scheming to buy Democratic Queens state Sen. Malcolm Smith a Republican line on the New York mayoral ballot. Jasmine and former Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret were charged with accepting bribes in exchange for supporting a phony real estate deal connected with the alleged scheme. Desmaret has already pleaded guilty to mail fraud and extortion.
