YONKERS - Until 2011, parts of the Saw Mill River around the Yonkers waterfront was buried under a parking lot.

Thanks to a renovation project called daylighting, part of the river was uncovered, and is now the centerpiece of Van Der Donck Park.

With a swing of a sledgehammer today, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano officially began the second phase of the daylighting project by uncovering another small stretch of the river, running under what has been a vacant lot.

Officials say the Mill Street Courtyard will have the feel of a European-style piazza in Yonkers when it is finished.

Officials hope to finish the latest phase of the daylighting project of the Saw Mill River by late 2015.
