MOUNT VERNON - A Mount Vernon man was shot and killed by police after allegedly robbing a pharmacy at gunpoint in Manhattan.

Police say Scott Kato walked into Health Source Pharmacy on Second Avenue Friday afternoon with a gun, and demanded prescription pills and money. They say he fled the scene and was tracked with a device inside the prescription bottles.

He was found in a gray SUV heading north on the FDR's service road near East 96th Street when police say he pulled out a gun. Officers then shot at Kato, hitting him in the chest and killing him.

Police say Kato has a long prior-arrest record and may also be responsible for at least three other robberies at that same pharmacy that have taken place since last December.

News 12 reached out to residents in Kato's neighborhood in Mount Vernon, but none said they knew him.
