Routine traffic stop in Wawayanda uncovers 26 pounds of heroin

MIDDLETOWN - Police say they seized 26 pounds of heroin following a routine traffic stop Wednesday.

Officials say they pulled over a tractor-trailer on I-84 between exits 3 and 4 in Wawayanda and found the drugs, which have an estimated street value of about $12 million.

Authorities say the drugs were hidden in a compartment in the truck.

Officials are not revealing where the truck was heading or why authorities pulled it over, citing an ongoing investigation.

Both the driver and a passenger have been charged with possession of a controlled substance. They have been identified as 38-year-old Enrique Mendoza and 35-year-old Jaoquin Hernandez, both of Fresno, Calif.

The two men are being held without bail at Orange County Jail. They face eight to 20 years in prison if convicted.
