Roof collapses at youth retreat center at the Marian Shrine in Stony Point

The center's director says he hopes the building will be reopened by the summer. (2/16/14)

STONY POINT - Heavy snow and ice from the past week's storms brought down the roof of a dormitory at a retreat center in Stony Point.

The collapse happened at the youth retreat center at the Marian Shrine. Father James McKenna, the center's director, says the building was 70 years old and wasn't able to handle the harsh winter weather.

The center hosts retreats and ministries, and McKenna says he had to call a volunteer group expected this week to tell them they would have no place to stay.

No one was in the building at the time and no injuries were reported.

The entire building has been closed pending further inspection. McKenna says he hopes it can be repaired and reopened by the summer.
