Rocks, concrete fall onto Saw Mill Parkway after crash on Odell Avenue overpass

YONKERS - An early morning crash into an overpass shut down the northbound lanes of the Saw Mill Parkway in Yonkers for much of the day.

Police say a driver lost control due to black ice on the Odell Avenue overpass and smashed into the stone retaining wall at around 6:15 a.m. More than 1,000 pounds of rocks and concrete fell on the parkway below, narrowly missing speeding cars.

The driver was not seriously hurt.

Both Odell Avenue and the Saw Mill Parkway were closed as state Department of Transportation crews removed the stones and concrete and inspectors determined if there had been any structural damage to the overpass.

Once portable concrete barriers were installed to temporarily patch the gaping hole in the overpass, it and the parkway were allowed to reopen.

Officials are investigating how fast the driver was going when he crashed into the wall, as well as the sturdiness of the bridge.
