ROCKLAND - Parents and teachers in Rockland pleaded with state legislators Thursday night about the intense nature of the Common Core curriculum.

Common Core focuses on high-stakes math and English testing, and parents say it is causing undue stress in their children.

One mother said she watched her child's love of school deteriorate before her eyes.

A Clarkstown mother noted that only 30 percent of the students passed one of the tests, saying many of the tests are beyond the capabilities of many of the students.

A superintendent present at the meeting said it is a problem that teachers are not allowed to see the test prior to administering it. She says the teachers and students are going into it blind.

State lawmakers will present the concerns and recommendations gathered at the forum to the governor and education commissioner.
