CARMEL - The rift between Putnam County Sheriff Don Smith and Westchester District Attorney Adam Levy is continuing to heat up.

The rift between the two men began last year when Smith arrested Alexandru Hossu, Levy's personal trainer, for allegedly raping a teenage girl. Hossu was eventually acquitted.

Levy says he believes the arrest of Hossu was a politically-motivated decision, with the objective of discrediting him. Last year, Levy filed a $5 million lawsuit against Smith.

Now, Smith filed a $5 million defamation lawsuit over statements made by the district attorney calling the sheriff "delusional" and "paranoid."
