NEW CITY - The Rockland man who admitted to beating his estranged girlfriend to death learned today that he may spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Riad Dib, 67, was sentenced to 18 years to life in the murder of 68-year-old Cecile Garbarino in her Wesley Hills home. Dib, a Syrian national, admitted to beating her to death with her own shoe in January 2013.

The two had lived together, but she decided to break off their relationship.

In September 2013, Dib confessed his guilt and agreed to a plea deal. His sentencing was delayed in January after he told the court he received inadequate counsel.

Members of the Garbarino family left Rockland County Court Tuesday after the sentencing and said they hope Dib spends the rest of his life in prison.

"We are relieved that this process looks to be over finally. Hopefully we can start to move forward and focus on teaching future generations of our family who my mother really was and not focused solely on the next court date," said Michael Garbarino, the victim's son.

Dib's attorney says he will appeal his client's case.
