TUCKAHOE - New questions have been raised about the safety of a controversial project in Tuckahoe that will convert an old marble quarry and landfill into a hotel.

Critics of the proposed SpringHill Suites hotel have been concerned about possible contamination at the site since the project came to light, but the concern came to a head Wednesday after people spotted aerosol cans in the soil at 109 Marbledale Road.

Vladimir Zollotev, the owner of Ki Martial Arts on Marbledale Road, said he’s not holding any classes there because he doesn’t want to endanger his students.

Zollotev said he was forced to relocate for the safety of his students and their parents.

Neighbors say they have gotten few answers from village authorities, and since construction began, some have claimed toxic vapors and dust are being released into the environment.

News 12 spoke with the village manager, who said via email that a plan is in the works in case construction workers uncover anything toxic. The manager also said that the DEC is monitoring the site and hasn't found any problems so far.
