THIELLS - Rep. Nita Lowey addressed a large crowd at Fieldstone Middle School Saturday about health care.

The meeting comes amid a furious debate in Washington over the future of health care, as Republican lawmakers continue to push through a controversial bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.

"More than 14 million Americans would lose their health coverage next year," Lowey says.

The Republican bill to replace Obamacare has been winding its way through Congress over the last few weeks. The Trump administration promises to lower health care costs by cutting regulations and promoting more competition in the insurance market. 

So far, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have expressed doubt over whether the American Health Care Act will be able to achieve its goals. 

Other questions were raised Saturday about the future of Planned Parenthood and federal cuts to science and medical research.

"Keep talking, emails, send letters. Let the people know that you are strong supporters of the right to choose," Lowey says. “In the 2017 bill, we have an increase for the National Institutes of Health. In 2018, we are hoping there will be bipartisan support if we are ever able to do that bill to increase it once again."

This is one of several health care town hall meetings the congresswoman is delivering this weekend. 

A vote on the Republican-sponsored health care bill is expected to take place in the House on Thursday.
