SPRING VALLEY - A football coach in Rockland County has been arrested for allegedly striking one of his players in the head with a helmet.

Police say Ramapo High School head football coach Duff Pannell has been charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child after hitting one of his players.

In a copy of the criminal complaint received by News 12, a 15-year-old player alleges that Pannell struck him in the head with a football helmet during practice Monday. The player says he didn't have his helmet on when he was struck, and he suffered damage to his left eye and was bleeding. The 10th-grader went to Good Samaritan Hospital and is expected to be OK.

Pannell was released on his own recognizance. School officials say he has also been released from his football coaching duties.
