YONKERS - Educators, parents, union leaders and lawmakers gathered Monday to call attention to what they say is a dismal state of public education.

Dozens rallied in Yonkers against standardized testing as part of a National Day of Action. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and Randy Weingarten, the head of the American Federation of Teachers, said there needs to be a greater investment in public schools and colleges. They said it's time for a renewed focus on teaching and learning instead of testing.

Pat Puleo, the president of the Yonkers Teachers' Union, said it's time to put a moratorium on testing so kids can learn the curriculum. She is calling on lawmakers to take back education.

Rallies were also held in Nyack and nationwide.
