GOSHEN - A Goshen woman is now in a vegetative state after undergoing a routine hospital procedure.

Raina Ferraro suffered severe brain damage after undergoing an endoscopy at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center back in January. Ferraro originally went to the hospital for severe stomach pains.

Ferraro's parents are now suing the hospital, saying the doctors were careless, negligent and failed to properly administer anesthesia. During the procedure, Ferraro went into cardiac and respiratory arrest.

The 19-year-old Rockland Community College freshman was studying liberal arts in hopes of becoming a social worker.

The New York State Health Department says it is looking into the case. A spokesperson for the hospital declined to comment citing confidentiality laws.
