Pols look to raise minimum age to buy cigarettes

MILLWOOD - Some Westchester County legislators want to raise the minimum age to buy cigarettes from 18 to 19.

A group of lawmakers made the announcement of its proposed legislation yesterday at Rocky's Deli on Saw Mill River Road in Millwood.

Nine years ago, the owner of the deli stopped selling tobacco products. Despite losing an estimated $50,000 a year in profits, owner Greg Santone says it is the right thing to do. "We see the devastating effects that early addiction has on people's lives, and we're really just trying to stop, circumvent help for young people to make healthy choices. This is one way to do that," says Santone.

If the law passes, Westchester would join other communities who have increased the smoking age like New York City, Nassau and Suffolk counties.
