MOUNT VERNON - Police are reviewing surveillance video in an attempt to figure out what led to a deadly shooting in Mount Vernon.

Michael Santiago, 26, of the Bronx, was gunned down Tuesday in the parking lot of 22 Sheridan Ave., near East Lincoln Avenue. Police say Santiago was in a car with his ex-girlfriend when they pulled up to her apartment around 3:30 p.m. They say when Santiago got out of the car, he was shot several times with a sawed-off shotgun by Kamau Kiarie.

Detectives were already routinely on patrol in the area when they heard the gunshots. Police captured 35-year-old Kiarie, also of the Bronx, just feet away from the crime scene and charged him with second-degree murder.

They say Kiarie, a convicted sex offender with a lengthy criminal past, had a warrant out for his arrest because he hadn't registered his residence.
