SUFFERN - Dozens of first responders were called to the scene of a wrong-way crash Tuesday morning on the New York State Thruway.

Rockland paramedics Ryan Quinlan and Kathleen Juritsch were dispatched to the scene.

They said their goal, as always, was to save the lives of the victims, but it was too late by the time they arrived.

Police say both 32-year-old Richard Christopher and 59-year-old James DeVito died on impact after Christopher's pickup truck was going the wrong way and struck DeVito’s Honda CRV in the northbound lane of I-87.

Quinlan says this was a hard scene to cover for even the most experienced first responders.

"It takes a toll," he says. "People are in the EMS, fire, police, we have our own way of dealing with things like this, but it does take a toll."
