PEEKSKILL - A News 12 three-part series on the danger of heroin in the Hudson Valley has sparked controversy within Peekskill.

In the last part of the 'Hooked on Heroin' series, News 12 went undercover to show the problems in the city.

Mayor Frank Catalina feels the city was not portrayed in the best light. He says that according to statistics obtained by the city, only one of 72 heroin related deaths in Westchester County reported in 2013 was from Peekskill.

The mayor claims the police department never got permission from the city to authorize the undercover story.

"This action has severely tarnished the image and reputation of Peekskill throughout the county," says Catalina. "I am disappointed by this incident, but I can tell you, that we have taken measures…to minimize the risk that anything like this will ever happen again."

The mayor would not elaborate as to what measures were taken. News 12 attempted to speak to Police Chief Eric Johansen, but he declined to comment.
