Mount Vernon set to give away hundreds of backpacks

The city's annual 'Back to School Backpack Giveaway

The city's annual 'Back to School Backpack Giveaway and Fair' will give hundreds of students new gear.

MOUNT VERNON - Mount Vernon is teaming up with the city's school district for the third annual "Back to School Backpack Giveaway and Fair."

The event takes place this Saturday at Hartley Park.

Donations will go toward helping hundreds of students gear up for the coming school year.

New school superintendent Kenneth Williams says he is excited about the community support for the program. "What it's really about is the community coming together, and doing what's best for the kids. Creating a synergy to turn a school around, getting our kids back on track, it's just a symbol of what the community is doing," says Williams.
