MOUNT VERNON - A man accused of a fatal stabbing in Yonkers pleaded not guilty to manslaughter Wednesday.

James Puryear died in October after being stabbed on Elm Street in Yonkers. Investigators say Donte Pace, of Mount Vernon, stabbed Puryear in the heart, killing him.

They say it’s not clear what caused the altercation between the men.

Puryear’s mother, Demetria Williamson, says she wants answers.

"I just want him to tell the truth and tell why he did it,” she says. “How it happened. Just tell the truth."

The defense attorneys say it is tragic that a man lost his life but that there are other circumstances in the case. They may seek a mental health defense.

They also claim that Puryear threatened Pace in the past and even had a friend stab some of Pace's family members.

Puryear's mother denies the two men even knew each other.

A judge set bail at $250,000 cash or $500,000 bond.

Pace is due back in court next month.
