MOUNT VERNON - Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas threw the city clerk out of a meeting at Mount Vernon City Hall Tuesday -- and when the clerk left, it was on a stretcher.

City Council President Roberta Apuzzo says she'd never seen anything like it before. She says the tension between Thomas and George Brown, the city clerk, has been brewing for months.

The bi-weekly Board of EstimateĀ are usually uneventful affairs with a focus on the mundane parts of city business, officials say.

But Tuesday, witnesses say Brown chastised the mayor for withholding the meeting's agenda.

After the exchange of words, as Brown was leaving the meeting, a member of the mayor's security detail reportedly touched him. Then he collapsed.

A Facebook Live stream broadcast video of the incident, and although Brown was taken to a hospital, Mayor Thomas accused him of faking the fall.

"There was no incident involving the city clerk, as the video clearly shows," Thomas said in a statement. "Residents of the community have complained to this office that the city clerk appears to be unable to perform his duties and that some action should be taken."

Brown remained hospitalized Wednesday afternoon for observation. It's unclear what injuries he suffered.
