MANHATTAN - The Federal Railroad Administration has announced it will soon require cameras onboard Metro-North trains.

The camera will be installed inside train cabs and outward, facing the train tracks. Lawmakers who have been pushing for cameras in the wake of last month's deadly train derailment in the Bronx say they will help with investigations following accidents and serve as a deterrent for misconduct. The NTSB says it has been urging the FRA to require cameras for years.

"There is no reason that these cameras should not have been in place well before now," says Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), who has joined Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in calling for Metro-North to install cameras after the derailment last month.

The cameras will be in place on trains in about a year. Blumenthal says FRA officials told him the cost of installation has kept them from installing the cameras before.
