Meetings held this week on new Tappan Zee Bridge plans, concerns of residents

TARRYTOWN - A new animation shows the new Tappan Zee Bridge rising from the waters of the Hudson River, showing people from the Hudson Valley what they can expect as the construction work moves forward.

The animation was unveiled at two public meetings this week. On Wednesday, state officials came to Sleepy Hollow High School to give people a progress report on the $3.9 billion project. They conducted another meeting at Nyack High School on Thursday night.

In a little over a year, Tappan Zee Constructors has given out only 35 percent of subcontracts with 65 percent more to be handed out. "If there are any local companies or local workers who want to get involved, they can contact us and we want to make this project have a positive economic impact on people of the Hudson Valley and New York state," says Brian Conybeare, the governor's special advisor.

State officials say one of the most exciting aspects of the new span will be the proposed shared-use path where residents can bike, jog and walk on six scenic overlook paths.

Safety is also a concern after last summer's tragic accident in which a Rockland bride-to-be and her fiance's best man were killed when the boat they were riding in crashed into a construction barge at night. New safety enhancements include an expanded safety zone for recreational boats and GPS tracking devices, which will be placed on the dozens of construction barges. Boaters will be able to go to a website and map out the barge locations. "You'll be able to see which ones are in motion, which ones are parked, which ones have stopped; the goal is to empower people with information and make the construction zone, a very busy construction zone, as safe as possible," says Conybeare.

The two meetings held were a chance for residents not only to get an update on the construction, but to voice concerns and ask questions.
