Man found dead of gunshot wounds near Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh

NEWBURGH - A man has been found dead of gunshot wounds near the campus of an Orange County college.

Police say Jared Plante, 36, of Newburgh, was found yesterday afternoon in an SUV that slammed into a dorm near Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh. They say Plante had been shot several times.

It's not clear if he was shot by someone inside or outside of his Ford Explorer. The timeframe is unclear regarding when he was shot and ultimately crashed.

Police say it's fortunate the school was closed because otherwise there would have been a number of students in the area where he crashed.

It's the city's first homicide of the year. Police have not released a motive for the shooting.
