YONKERS - A Yonkers man is recovering after falling into an incinerator last night.

Police say the man was hit by a bag of garbage, and was knocked into the incinerator of his own apartment building at 47 Riverdale Ave.

Authorities say the man was leaning over the incinerator, apparently trying to get cans to recycle for money, when a garbage bag from one of the upper levels of the building came down and hit him in the head.

According to rescue crews, the 58-year-old man was trapped in the incinerator all night. He was pulled out of the incinerator this morning at around 7:15.

The man was not seriously hurt and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center to be checked out.

Police tell News 12 that incinerator is working, but it's unclear how often it is in use.
