SOUTH SALEM - More than 1,000 people have signed a petition to keep a South Salem school from shutting its doors.

A task force took a preliminary vote to shut down Lewisboro Elementary School, located on Bouton Road.

The group says that overall enrollment would decline in the district by 400 students by 2020.

If the school closes, children in the area will be transferred to one of the Katonah-Lewisboro district's other three elementary schools in the fall.

Parents fear that larger class sizes will have a negative impact on the community.

The final hearing on the school closure is scheduled for Thursday.
