MILFORD - A legislative panel voted to put the brakes on a controversial beach project in Milford.

The State Environment Committee voted Monday to stop the plan to make $10 million worth of improvements unless Milford city leaders OK it first.

The project would include additional bathrooms, a snack stand and almost 200 extra parking spots.

More than 400 Milford residents have packed public meetings to oppose the changes.

Many say they do not want these changes due to the possibility of having to pay for parking, which is currently free.

"We're not totally opposed to what the state wants to do, but we just think they ought to be doing more in terms of studying what the impact would be on the environment, how it's going to affect traffic in the residential areas," says Albert May, of Milford.

State park leaders say the vote sets a dangerous precedent.

"It would enable local officials to block the ability to have basic sanitation services at a very popular state park along our shoreline," says Robert Klee, DEEP commissioner. "We think the state could have handled it better. They could have been more responsive to when the residents started saying what their concerns were."

The next step in stopping the project would be for the full state House and Senate to also agree on putting it on hold.
