CENTRAL VALLEY - An Orange County middle school teacher is under fire for allegedly slapping an eighth-grade boy across the face.

According to the boy’s parents, 65-year-old Keith Sherman slapped their son without warning after overhearing him curse among friends in the hallway.

The boy's parents claim the veteran teacher was approved to retire from Monroe-Woodbury Middle School at the end of the year, but now, after allegedly striking their son, he has been put on paid leave.

The district says the allegations are being handled as a personnel matter, and Woodbury police say no charges will be filed because the student was not physically injured.

The district is also reportedly meeting with the student's parents next week, who say Keith Sherman's future at the school will be decided during a March 19 board meeting.

Sherman has taught music at the school for 33 years.
