YONKERS - News 12 recently went undercover in an effort to buy synthetic marijuana known as K2, which has been responsible for thousands of emergency room visits in the past year.

The drug is quickly becoming the most worrisome health threat to the county since the outbreak of heroin.

Sen. Charles Schumer says the cost of the drug is low but the consequences are deadly.

"Westchester County is towards the high end in terms of how much abuse there is," says Schumer. "Our job is to get Congress to step up to the plate, put the money into both enforcement and treatment and stop this."

Scott Gilet, of the Briarcliff Institute for Recovery, recently conducted a test on teen K2 users. Gilet says he found that teens' brains were altered. He also says there was very high levels of toxicity. He adds that someone can go out and use K2 and have the ramifications felt months, maybe even years, afterward.

In addition, Gilet says that buying the drug is as easy as getting a candy bar.

News 12 tested the theory by sending a photographer and undercover camera to nearly three dozen bodegas over four months. Clearly aware of the recent ban on the potent product, not one shop sold the drug to News 12's photographer.

However, since the fine is only $250 teens tell News 12 that K2 is readily available as highlighted in an undercover video staged by Sen. Jeff Klein. The footage was taken at a store on the Yonkers-Bronx border and shows a worker saying that K2 is available to buy at the store.

News 12 also found that the drug is available on the internet and clearly being marketed to teens. News 12 was able to obtain some and received the package in the mail, no questions asked.

The K2 News 12 received was taken to one of the top forensic labs in the country to see just what $200 gets you. One of the samples, called Pure 100% Evil, was found to have xlr11, which is a dangerous substance that is known to cause paranoia, seizures, psychotic episodes, hallucinations and kidney failure. In some cases, it can even cause death. The substance is now illegal nationwide.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Wednesday a lawsuit against one of the companies where News 12 obtained K2. The New York-based website legalherbud.com is accused of selling potentially dangerous strands of K2.
