SUFFERN - A demolition crew in Suffern began work today on tearing down homes that were severely damaged by Hurricane Irene.

Two homes were demolished today on Lonergan Drive and two more will be torn down next week. Residents in the Squires Gate community, where the homes were demolished, say they've been waiting for the homes to be torn down since Irene struck more than two years ago.

Neighbors formed the Concerned Citizens of Suffern after the storm, hoping to find ways to solve the long-term flooding issue. One plan includes syphoning off the Mahwah River, which is located in their backyards and floods during bad weather.

FEMA will reimburse the village more than $190,000 to tear down the homes.
