ALBANY - State lawmakers are looking to crack down on landlords who divide properties into illegal apartments.

Legislation is being proposed that would make it a felony to endanger first responders by performing the renovation without approval.

On several occasions, firefighters in the Hudson Valley have been injured and even killed responding to fires when they run into locked rooms created by added walls.

Members of the Rockland Illegal Housing Task force helped to craft the proposal, which remains before the code committees in both houses.
