Hospital employee hits panic button, sends center into lockdown (2/16/17)

WHITE PLAINS - Police say someone accidentally pushed a “panic button” at the Burke Rehabilitation Center in White Plains this morning, sending staffers into a panic and prompting a lockdown.

White Plains police are saying it was an unfortunate accident after someone at the center hit the emergency notification button that sends out a text message that there's an active shooter on the property.

All staff members received the message and the hospital went into lockdown.

Officers went from building to building to investigate, and when it was discovered that it was not a real emergency, they spoke to staff members to calm them down.

Patients and visitors were not allowed to come onto the property while police were conducting their searches.

The lockdown was later lifted after some 40 to 50 police officers searched the 10 buildings.
