Heavy snow, minimal melting blamed for Westchester, Hudson Valley rooftop collapses

NANUET - Heavy snow from Thursday's storm is being blamed for several collapsed roofs across Westchester and the Hudson Valley.

Fire officials say the roof on one of the buildings at the West Rock Sports and Entertainment Complex in Nanuet caved in at around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

Two workers inside the building said they heard what sounded like a rumbling earthquake. They came out and saw one of the buildings come down. They immediately called 911 as one of the natural gas lines to the building ruptured. A fire damaged the building even further.

A ShopRite grocery store in Garnerville lost a 50-by-50-foot section of its roof under the weight of the snow at around 7:15 a.m. Friday. There were no injuries. The store will be closed until further notice.

Around the same time in Congers, the roof on a commercial building caved in. The sole commercial tenant there, Denise DiParna, who owns a Boars Head distributorship, says business is on hold for the moment.

The American Legion building in Dobbs Ferry also had its roof cave in, just before a contractor was scheduled to put up a temporary wall for stability. The contractor was called after the legion commander noticed a separation between the roof and walls.

Between 2 and 5 inches of snow are expected to fall across the region today.
