MOUNT VERNON - Police say a gunman opened fire Thursday afternoon on the 200-block of South Second Avenue in Mount Vernon.

According to police, the gunman was riding in a car. Investigators believe the shooter was aiming at someone on the street.

No one was hurt in the incident, but a vintage Mercedes parked on the street suffered damage.

A police sergeant was on patrol in the area, moments before the shots rang out. Investigators on the scene say the gunman was three cars behind the officer, but no arrests have been made.

This is the second instance of gunfire this week in the neighborhood.
