Governor's race between Andrew Cuomo and Rob Astorino heating up

SUFFERN - The war of words in the race for governor in New York is heating up, on one side at least.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo was in the Hudson Valley yesterday to talk taxes. The Democrat was pushing his new property tax incentive program at Rockland Community College in Suffern.

When asked about a possible showdown with Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, the Mount Kisco resident said politics is the farthest thing from his mind. "I'm going to continue to do the government work and politics will take care of themselves."

In Albany on Tuesday, Astorino blasted Cuomo on his immigration policy. Astorino says if the governor had made it a priority, he could have passed the Dream Act, a bill to give undocumented immigrants access to tuition assistance programs. "He's got an extraordinary amount of power through the budget process, he seems to strong arm his way through on other things when he wanted it, so it's a little surprising that it went down."

Blasting the Dream Act is an interesting strategy for Astorino since he doesn't support the bill. Instead, the Republican candidate says the issue should be dealt with on the federal level.

Astorino is currently trailing Cuomo in the polls, fundraising and name recognition.
