HIGHLAND FALLS - Hundreds of employees at West Point may be affected by furloughs.

The Department of Defense, which has delayed issuing the furlough notices until early next month, says it doesn't know if the delay will impact the number of furlough days for the year. However, workers are worried they will be furloughed more frequently over a shorter period of time.

Prison workers at Otisville recently learned they have been spared of the furlough.

Attorney General Eric Holder says he averted furloughs for more than 3,500 prison staffers around the country by transferring $150 million in Justice Department funds into the prison's account. Local union leaders call the money a Band-Aid. The attorney general says the Department of Justice is still dealing with $1.6 billion in budget reductions and says the $150 million only covers correctional workers through the end of September.
